Growing conditions
Lipstick palms grow naturally in peat swamp forests, so they need warmth, humidity and plenty of water. They are best suited to tropical and warm subtropical landscapes, heated glasshouses and resort gardens.
- Temperature: warm all year, ideally 24–32 °C. It is very sensitive to cold; keep it above about 15 °C.
- Water: constantly moist to wet soil. It tolerates waterlogged ground and even shallow standing water, but not drying out.
- Light: young plants prefer light shade; established clumps take full sun in humid climates.
- Humidity: high. Dry air causes brown leaf tips and slows growth, which makes it difficult as an indoor plant.
- Growth: slow, forming a clump of slender stems that colour red as they mature.

Import rules for palms differ by country. In the United States every order needs a USDA import permit (PPQ 587); see how to import plants from Indonesia to the USA.
