These are the varieties buyers ask about most. Indonesia grows many more banana cultivars, including red-skinned types; if you are looking for a specific Musa species or cultivar, send us the name by email or WhatsApp and we ask our growers.
Pink Banana Tree (Musa velutina)
A compact ornamental banana from northeast India, usually 1.5–2 m tall. Upright pink flower bracts are followed by velvety pink fruits that split open when ripe. The fruit is edible but full of hard seeds; it is grown for its looks.
Praying Hand Banana
A cultivar whose fingers grow fused together in each hand, so a bunch looks like hands pressed together in prayer. Edible, with soft, mildly sweet flesh, and a talking point in any tropical garden.
Musa Chiliocarpa / Thousand Finger Banana
Known in Indonesia as pisang seribu. One very long bunch carries hundreds of small fingers, which is where the name comes from. A collector’s banana, grown for the spectacle more than the harvest.
Blue Java “Ice Cream” Banana
Silvery blue-green fruit when unripe and soft, sweet flesh often compared to vanilla ice cream, hence the nickname. The plant grows tall, about 4.5–6 m, and copes with cooler weather better than most bananas.
Which banana varieties are rare?
Most bananas in shops worldwide are a handful of Cavendish cultivars. “Rare” bananas are everything else: ornamental wild species such as Musa velutina and Musa ornata, unusual cultivars such as Praying Hands, Blue Java or the thousand-finger Musa chiliocarpa, and local Indonesian cultivars that are hardly grown outside Southeast Asia. Many are common in Indonesian villages but difficult to find abroad, mainly because banana plants are hard to import.
Import rules for banana plants
Banana plants are among the most tightly regulated plants to import, because banana pests and diseases, such as banana bunchy top virus, Fusarium wilt (Panama disease) and banana weevils, can travel with plants and soil. The rules differ a lot from country to country:
- Some countries do not accept banana plants from Indonesia at all.
- Some accept only tissue-culture plantlets, or require post-entry quarantine.
- Others accept bare-root plants with an import permit and a phytosanitary certificate.

Do you ship Banana Plants internationally?
Yes, to countries that accept banana plants from Indonesia. Banana import rules are strict and some countries do not allow them at all, so send us your country and the varieties first and we confirm what can be exported before you pay.
Are you a wholesale supplier of banana plants?
Yes. We supply single plants for collectors and wholesale quantities for nurseries and landscape projects. Very rare varieties are available only in small numbers.
