Why plant shops stock it
The red and pink foliage gives a strong colour accent without relying on flowers, and like other Billbergia it is tolerant of average room humidity and forms offsets readily. Good light keeps the burgundy colour deep. Pair it with the green speckled Billbergia or other bromeliads in a mixed order.

How we pack it
Bromeliads are shipped bare-root: the rosette is cleaned, treated against pests at the quarantine office, and the roots are wrapped in moist sphagnum moss, or tissue for countries that do not accept moss, inside ventilated boxes.
Care after arrival
- Potting: pot it within a day of arrival in a small pot with a porous, fast-draining mix of bark and perlite. Set the base at the surface; buried leaves rot.
- Light: bright light keeps the speckles and colour strong. Shade it from hot midday sun, which scorches the leaves.
- Water: keep a little fresh water in the central cup and let the mix dry slightly between waterings. Empty and refill the cup every week or two.
- Temperature: warm and frost-free, ideally 15–30 °C (60–85 °F).
