Why plant shops stock it

Most Syngonium sold in shops show only the juvenile arrow-shaped leaf. Once a plant climbs, its leaves change into the mature form with up to six lobes, and the white markings turn softer and greener. That adult look is what collectors ask for, and it is hard to find because it needs time and support to develop.

Give it a pole to climb and it keeps producing mature leaves instead of reverting to the small juvenile form.

How we pack it

Plants are cleaned, treated against pests at the quarantine office and packed bare-root in sphagnum moss, or in tissue for countries that do not accept moss, inside ventilated boxes.

Care after arrival

  • Potting: pot it within a day of arrival in a light, well-draining aroid mix and keep it slightly moist, not wet, for the first two weeks.
  • Light: bright, indirect light. Direct sun fades the colour and can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: water when the top 2–3 cm of the mix is dry. Soggy soil causes root rot.
  • Support: a moss pole or stick keeps the leaves in mature form.
  • Pets: like most aroids, the sap contains calcium oxalate and irritates pets if chewed. Keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.
