Don’t worry—this is common, and there’s a simple method to help your plant bounce back quickly: the humidity dome method.
In Indonesia, we call it the sungkup method. We do that in our greenhouse when acclimating the jungle plants.
In this article, we’ll explain what the humidity dome method is, why it’s essential for plants that have been shipped, and how you can easily set it up at home.
If you buy plants from Indonesia like jungle plants, fiddle leaf fig variegated, and palm, this method can save your plants.

What is the Humidity Dome Method?
The humidity dome method involves covering your plant with a transparent enclosure to create a mini greenhouse effect. This setup increases the humidity around the plant, helping it recover from stress and encouraging healthy growth.
How does the does the Humidity Dome work?
- Moisture Retention: Keeps the air around the plant moist, which reduces water loss through the leaves.
- Temperature regulation: creates a consistent environment that protects the plant from abrupt temperature changes.
- Reduces Stress: It resembles the plant’s natural habitat, particularly for tropical species that prefer high humidity.
Why Do Shipped Plants Need Special Care?
Plants can get stressed out while being shipped because
- Temperature Changes: Being in hot or cold conditions.
- Lack of Light: Days spent in a box in the dark.
- Moving your body: Jumps and bumps can hurt roots and stems.
These things can cause plants to wilt, their leaves to turn yellow, or even go into shock. The humidity dome method helps with these problems by making a safe place for recovery.
Usually plants doens’t like water can be put in humidity dome like jungle plants and hard tree plants.
How to Set Up a Humidity Dome at Home

What you need:
- A clear plastic box, bag, or bottle that has been cut off
- A pot that drains well with your plant in it
- Small stakes can be added if you want to keep the cover from touching the plant.
Here are some tips during acclimating the plants in humidity dome
- When watering your plant, make sure the soil is damp but not drenched.
In our nursery, we use a plastic bag. You also can use stakes to keep the plastic bag from touching the plants.
Check for airflow by making tiny punctures in the cover. To let in some fresh air, you could also lift the cover once a day for a short while.
Put the plant in a warm place with indirect sunlight. If you put them under direct sunlight, it can cause the dome to overheat, and the plant may suffer harm.
What you need to check every day is to keep an eye out for mold or standing water and adjust the airflow if you see condensation starting to form.
